Interview with Gaby Paul

Dream pop artist Gaby Paul's latest release is 'Bedroom Velvet', I caught up with Gaby to ask about the song, the main inspiration behind the song and what music she's been listening to recently.

Hi Gaby. How are you?

I’m doing amazing at the moment.

How would you describe your sound to the readers?

I would say my sound is probably something you’d listen to late at night. My music at the moment is pretty bare boned with isolated vocals, just how I like it.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

Nina Simone and Amy Winehouse have always been up there. I’ve always been inspired by their passion and brutally honest lyrics.

How did your journey start?

I started performing as a very young teenager and participated in weekly voice lessons, which continued for years of my life. I met my producer when I first moved to Phoenix in 2014 and have been working with him ever since.

Can you talk us through how this song was created?

Bedroom Velvet was created in under an hour. It seemed like the song just wrote itself. It came together so easily and effortlessly. I was in the studio and before the hour was even over, the song was done.

Did you have to adapt how you worked due to the pandemic at all?

I personally did not have to adapt my work process during the pandemic. I usually either write by myself or I hide out in the studio. It’s very relaxing.

What was the main inspiration behind the lyrics of this song?

I wrote this song about someone who plays impeccable piano and how I felt in our musical environment when we write together. I like painting a vivid picture for the listeners who will understand the exact mood from detailed and atmospheric lyrics.

Do you have a favourite lyric or line from the song?

I don’t really have a favorite lyric from this project. The lyrics in Bedroom Velvet are not long and I think they are very to the point in a visual aspect. “Short and sweet” as one would say.

What’s next for you? Is there any new music on the way?

I have a lot of music on the way. I have two singles titled “Melt Into Honey” and “Speaking In Tongues” which will be dropping within the next couple of months. There will be lots of intimate acoustic performances coming in the near future, too.

What music have you been listening to lately? Anything you can recommend to us?

I’d recommend listening to Emmett LaFave. We just recorded a song together which will be dropping very soon. I also have another collaborative project coming out with a beautiful friend of mine named Autumn Cooper. They are very different sounds but I’d recommend listening to them both.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions for us, it's really appreciated.
