Interview with Break Loose

Brake Loose are a Dublin-based rock band consisting of frontman Alex Murillo, guitarist David O’Grady, bassist Juanjo Pulpeiro, and drummer Dylan Martin. Led and formed in 2021 by Venezuelan singer and poet Alejandro Murillo, they've established themselves as a notable force on the Irish rock scene.

I caught up with Alex to talk all about their new single 'LOVE ON FIRE' as well as touring and what's next for them!

Hi, how are you?

Good thanks, good to hear from you!

How would you describe your sound to the readers?

We create rock music for those with lust for life. We call it live poetic rock’n’roll for gothic cowboys. Our sound combines elements from Gothic Rock and Pop Rock, due to the nature of our lyrics and melodies, and Industrial Rock as well, due to the nature of our guitar riffs and drum beats. Expect high energy and emotional vocals with infectious guitar riffs that will elevate your inner madness!

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?

The Doors, The Cult, Billy Idol, INXS, Danzig, HIM, Type O Negative, Nine Inch Nails, Velvet Revolver and Aerosmith.

How did your music journey start?

The band started initially in 2019 but Covid happened and it was re-formed in 2021. Alex (myself) formed and created the band after moving from Venezuela to Ireland to attend BIMM institute in Dublin.

Your new single ‘LOVE ON FIRE’ is out now, congratulations! This song has been described as a “fierce, infectious, energetic” which I love, how was the process of creating this song for you?

Easy enough, it basically came out into existence or came out of the blue while trying to figure out the riff and melody of another song we were working on at the moment in our studio. It's funny that some of the best songs out there take the least amount of time to write them. Everything just works immediately.

Can you explain more about the inspiration behind the lyrics for this song? Why was this a song you wanted to write?

‘Love On Fire’ is a song about the process of unfolding the true face of your significant other through love. The inspiration behind the song is both a combination of past and present relationships that tend to define your understanding or awareness of love in any sort of romantic relationships you may encounter throughout your life. In conclusion, it is a song about encouraging others to open themselves totally to the experience and the discovery of love without the fear of getting hurt, in other words, you might get hurt, but in the end it is worth it.

Do you have a favourite lyric or line from the song?

"You're devoted like a dying daisy, my baby, so empty, endless like a crying doorway" French Poet Arthur Rimbaud was the main source of inspiration behind the lyrics for 'LOVE ON FIRE'.

What’s something you want listeners to take away from listening to ‘LOVE ON FIRE’?

That's a hard question, I honestly don't know the right answer. Everyone perceives, smells and feels reality slightly differently. Especially music, It is so personal and subjective to each of us. So, I guess in your own ways of understanding and listening to what we bring to your ears, just listen, that's about it. I hope it makes you feel something, I hope it makes you feel alive and makes you more passionate about our music.

I can imagine this song going down great live! What do you enjoy most about playing live?

The breakdown, I usually ask the audience if there's anybody who speaks or understands Spanish, if they react positively, I sing the breakdown, which is basically the chorus, in Spanish, it's unreal.

Is there a song that you always look forward to playing live the most?

LOVE ON FIRE and Rebel Rebel (Evil Like The Devil) those songs are so damn good to play them live, the sound even better than the recordings as we are a live rock band, we are all about the live show.

Do you have a favourite memory from your tour?

Last year's winter tour playing Electric Avenue at Waterford City. Show was sold out, the place was so full that you could feel the flour shaking when the crowd was jumping to Rebel Rebel (Evil Like The Devil).

What’s next for you? Do you have any more music on the way?

Yes, we have a new single called 'Treat Her Like A Rose' coming out next month through Earache Records. And then the release of our debut EP before our UK & IE summer tour.

And lastly, what music have you been listening to recently? Anything you can recommend to us?

Warren Zeiders, a country rock artist with a gothic touch, his last release 'Sin So Sweet' is a masterpiece for me.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer these questions for us, it’s really appreciated!

Not at all thank you Elin! (Alex).
